“There is a war, and in this war your soul is being fought for. The enemy is on one side and God is on the other side.” These words are a message that God put in my mind some time ago for a person we were praying for. This message is also for you, yes you, the one who is reading. Believe it or not, you are in the middle of a spiritual war in which your soul is being fought for. Not your life, though, because your life will end one day, but your soul, which will live forever.
Spiritual Warfare
The Bible tells us about a war that is not visible to humans and that does not include human beings (Ephesians 6:12). The devil (the enemy) and evil spirits are part of this war. What do they want? They want to disobey God and drag your soul to hell. We can see the enemy in action from the beginning in the story of Adam and Eve. The enemy has not stopped throughout time, on the contrary, he has remained firm in his position. How does he manage to convince us? It’s easier for him than what it seems.
In order to understand the severity, I want to share these verses that have been stuck in my mind since I gave my life to Christ: Genesis 8:21 and Matthew 26:41. Open your bible and read them. I had heard of Noah’s story several times, but it wasn’t until I got baptized and read it on my own that it impacted me. There are several key points in this story but today I want to talk about verse 21 of Genesis 8. When I read it, God made sure I understood that human beings naturally sin. Upon understanding this message from God, I understood that naturally my instinct will be to sin, therefore I knew that I would have to stay as close to God as possible. Because only then would I be able to keep my soul in salvation.
In Matthew 26:41 you can read how our spirit will always be willing to serve God, but it is our flesh that will rebel. This is another war that exists. The war of our flesh against the spirit but this war is personal. In other words, our spirit will always be willing to serve God, but it is our body (the flesh) that will want to do the opposite. How can we win this war and take care of our soul if our heart is inclined to sin, and our body is weak? Good question! Ephesians chapter 6 has the answer. There, God tells us to put on his armor: the belt of truth, the breastplate of God’s justice, the shoes of the peace of the Good News, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the word of God. It also tells us to pray at all times, to be alert, and to pray for all believers.
This war will always exist as long as we are here in the world. It doesn’t even end when you’re baptized. Baptized or not, the enemy will always want to steal your soul. Now if there is a difference for those who have already been baptized because according to the bible when we get baptized God gives us the Holy Spirit to guide us, advise us and give us wisdom. We become new creatures, where we have been cleansed and restored spiritually, mentally, and physically through Jesus Christ. We are not the same person that we came to be in the past, we are already different thanks to God’s mercy and grace. Therefore, I tell you don’t fear, you are no longer alone. God walks along with you, in front of you, behind you and on your sides. Thank God for His everlasting presence.
I want to remind you that when God called you to serve Him, He had already equipped you with the tools you will need be a successful Christian. All you have to do is believe you are equipped, even if you believe it or feel. Just trust the Lord with all you might. Because it is your trust that matters. This leads me to tell you that even though you are already equipped, you are still the one pulling on the cords. God made us with free will, in other words, God created us with the freedom to decide over our lives and every single decision we come across. Every day, we need to make the decision of whether we want to obey God or not. Every day, every moment, we have the freedom to decide if our next decision will please God or not. Remember that now by being baptized, we now represent God, we are Christ’s followers, children of the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, of the Beginning and the End and the Almighty. We have to honor Him by making good decisions and giving a good living testimony.
What if you haven’t been baptized? The enemy of your soul will try to keep you like this, without having been reborn, as Jesus said. He will try to convince you that it is not necessary, that it is not worth it, or that the world is more fun, among other things. As long as you are not baptized, the enemy knows that you have not been anointed, cleansed, and that your mind and heart have not been renewed. He will always put obstacles so that you do not make the decision to give your life to Jesus. The enemy knows more about God than what you think. He knows that the only truth is Jesus, that no one reaches God but through Jesus Christ. He knows that we can do everything through Christ, and that the only way to enter the kingdom of God is by being baptized.
God created us to live together with him. We can corroborate this by reading the beginning of life in Genesis. God created human beings and put us in a special place where he came to visit us. Unfortunately, sin entered the mind and heart of the human and disobeyed God. Since then, this war began, the snake has not stopped instigating us to continue disobeying God, that same story continues to occur. How he comes into your life or how he comes to convince us is different for everyone. He knows very well how to disguise himself, what words to use and what to tease us with to be able to convince us to try that thing that does not please God. Do not think that you will be able to recognize him when he arrives at your life. The enemy is clever, and he will disguise himself in a way where we will welcome him into our lives.
Let’s go back to Genesis, how did he approach Adam and Eve? The enemy came dressed as a snake, why is it important? Because by reading Genesis 2:26 we can read that God put man in charge of the animals. What does this mean? That Adam and Eve spent time with the animals since it was their responsibility to take care of them. The moment the snake approached Eve, she did not fear for her life or mistrust him, on the contrary, she recognized him and welcomed him. The same happened with Adam, when he saw Eve and the snake, he welcomed their presence without any hesitation. Why? Because he knew them. The enemy will come into your life, through people and situations in which you will trust. Meditate on this because this is key to your spiritual life. Understanding that the enemy will come into your life in a way that you will open the door and welcome him into your life without even knowing who is behind the mask.
We were created to be in God’s presence
There is a war for your soul, and in this war the destiny of your soul is eternal life or death. Only you have the decision. God wants your soul to go to His presence where He destined it since the beginning. He will never get tired or give up on your soul, on the contrary, He will look for you over and over again. May the Lord bless you greatly.
